I hadn’t expected much from the Loading Dock based on the reviews. It sounded like your favorite neighbor’s backyard, except these guys served up some tastiness. Rumor has it that the owner Forest Cole got his start at the Brooklyn Flea, serving his signature fish tacos and now has progressed to the part eatery, part gallery, all vibe — former garment factor loading dock. This cryptic description and that restaurants / lounges are still a bit tough to come by in Downtwon Brooklyn compelled us to try it out.
We were disappointed. First, it’s dark. As in we walked in saw some people telling (ghost?) stories drinking beer, and could just make out the outline of the stairs. Feeling our way up the steps we got to the top, where it wasn’t much brighter. There was one lone couple pushing about the food, and one cook / waitress / manager — who told us to sit anywhere. The outdoor vibe was relaxing, but we wanted some place we could see the food so opted to go indoors. The space inside was unexpected, it hosts a kind of gallery, with a bird cage, stove and what seems to be the table from the Last Supper.
After making ourselves comfortable we went back to the front to pull out our various beers from the cooler (it’s bring your own service folks). And waited. Talked, and waited some more. Finally someone showed up with half our food — fish tacos which we were told was their specialty. The tacos were of slightly smaller than average size (for $5), tasty and quickly scarfed down. We waited for the rest of our food. But it didn’t come. Eventually we inquired about our beans and rice and were met with, “didn’t we give that to you?” No. Wait again while they whipped it up, and perhaps out of spite served it cool.
We probably won’t be coming back. Even if it’s the only game in town.
