80 Dekalb, known confusingly by it’s fill-in-the-blank “Bkln Dklb”. During this past weekend’s sojourn to Brooklyn we checked out the much publicized 80 Dekalb. Forest City’s rental project allegedly in Fort Greene but moonlighting in Downtown Brooklyn. We were passing it on our way from the Brooklyn Flea to Toren, and decided to stop in a take a look-see. It’s good to keep up with what the rental market looks like, we may one day rent our own own place if we win the lottery. The lobby very plush in the new condo sort of way, but nothing to write home about if you’ve seen new developments before. But our been-there-seen-that attitude vanished the minute we set foot in their sales office. Behind the receptionist are the most jaw dropping views of the Manhattan skyline. To showcase their views they encourage you to wait in their outside lounge, where the views will keep your head turning. Even their Brooklyn views (with the exception of the Forte which next to mine has GOT to have the worst backside ever) were impressive. Quite honestly, the Toren was losing some of it’s sheen in my eyes, we were one breath away from just renting out our place NOW and moving into the stairway to Heaven.
Alex — their broker was quick to see us, a nice surprise given we just walked in off the street. He was a character, perhaps one of the best sales agents I’ve met to date. This man knew how to make friends instantly. He made good eye contact, sized us up quickly and smelled what we type of units we were interested in. He use to work at Bergdorf, and the training showed — though really these units sort of sell themselves. First he showed us the one bedrooms — ranging in price from ~ $2,450-$2,600. The $2,400 unit was ( E line?) already impressive, high ceilings, new fixtures, stainless steel appliances, washer dryer, walk in closet and a spa like bathroom with a full length mirror for a medicine cabinet. But ah! Alex cautioned us “don’t think to hard about this one, this isn’t the unit for you”, “No?” I asked sure that if I WAS looking this unit would be perfect. “No” he said with certainy, “we have one more one bedroom that’s really quite special, the L line.” And it was special. The ceiling of this pad was 11ft at least, and those jaw dropping Manhattan views!
Then came the two bedrooms that Josh insisted on seeing, but for which I was holding a secret dread that it would so outshine our unit I would cry big fatties. And I nearly did. The two bedrooms are spectacular and come with a matching price tag of $3,500 a month. This is AFTER the two months of free rent. I meant to say “What???”, but my jaw slackened in disbelief. I mean really who were they kidding $2,600 for that awesome 1 bedroom to $3,500? Had they managed to rent any of those units? Actually they have, 80 Dekalb is 80% occupied and going quickly, “I’ll be out of a job by the end of July” Alex predicted. I believed him. But then I saw the common areas and well .. let’s say he didn’t save the best for last. The gym is nice, the lounge / library area is working the 80s, the small outdoor area .. not so nice, and the extra charge of $60 /mo to use the common areas — WTH?! As if the $2,400 – $3,500 rent were not enough, they couldn’t throw in the common areas? No. ”Did I mention it’s one of Brooklyn’s first green buildings? Alex offered. Yes, and I still want my common space. And just like that Toren won back its sheen. classic.
